ASHTON — During the regular meeting of the AFC School Board of Education, the board approved the resolution to adopt the FY13 Budget. A special meeting was held at 6:45 p.m. to entertain questions from the public about the budget. There were no members of the public present.
The board also approved the hiring of the following teacher aides: Dan Sheets, high school; Deb Fahs, high school; Sherry Harris, middle school; Lisa Heal, early childhood; Justin Lahman, elementary school; Sherry Reynolds, middle school; Loretta Swed, elementary school; Tim Wittenauer, elementary school and Natalie Anderson, middle school.
The board approved the Application for Recognition of Schools for the elementary school, middle school and high school.
The board also approved Christine Dvorak as volunteer assistant volleyball coach, Matt Smith as eighth grade boys basketball coach and Dave Mairs as seventh grade boys basketball coach.
Following a discussion about the recent issues surrounding the roof damage and damage to the library and computer room, the board approved $8,000 for middle school roof repairs if the insurance company does not approve the repairs.
The school will be producing a flyer for publication regarding the 1 percent sales tax increase that will be on the November ballot. The increase would provide many benefits to the school district. It is a county wide increase, not just a local increase. The board also plans to host public meetings to give the members of each community the opportunity to ask questions about the tax increase.
Nominating petitions are available at the AFC School District office located at the high school for three terms on the school board that are up for bid this coming spring. Nominating petitions must be filed between Dec. 17 and Dec. 24 at the district office.
The district received a $6,000 donation from KSB. The AFC Athletic Boosters are working toward replacing the other scoreboards used in local sports.
