Franklin Grove house fire remains under investigation

Posted: Wednesday, Oct 3rd, 2012

FRANKLIN GROVE — Nearly two weeks after a fire destroyed an abandoned house at 321 N. Walnut Street in Franklin Grove, officials are still seeking answers to its cause. The vacant home owned by Harold Suski of 411 Williamsburg Way, Belvidere, was discovered to be on fire shortly after 1 a.m. on the morning of Friday, Sept. 22 by Franklin Grove resident Terry North, as she was returning from her second shift job in Rockford.

North’s discovery, reporting call to 9-1-1 and prompt action to wake next door neighbors, the Gary L. Hunt family, possibly saved their home from complete destruction, and personal injury. The Hunt home, located less than 30 feet to the north of the Suski house sustained an estimated $17,000 worth of roof and exterior damage.

The Franklin Grove Fire Department, with the assistance of the Ashton Fire Department and the Dixon Rural Fire Department, were on the scene for more than four hours, battling the blaze, working to save the Hunt residence and insuring that the fire would not flare up again.

The origin of the fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshall.
