Don Fore to retire in Franklin Grove

Posted: Thursday, Nov 29th, 2012

FRANKLIN GROVE — Longtime Franklin Grove streets and alleys maintenance supervisor Don Fore will retire on November 30 after more than 16 years of service to the village covering two periods of service.

Fore joined the Franklin Grove Streets department in 1996 and worked until leaving in early 1999 to work for the AFC Elementary School as a custodian. Fore says he enjoyed working with the children and staff but he really enjoys the outdoors and so when a vacancy occurred in the street department in late 1999 he returned to the position he will retire from on Friday.

Don will join his wife of 47 years, Sheri, who retired as executive secretary from Lee Center School District in May of 2011 after 25 years with the district to enjoy some travel and relaxation.

Sergeant Donald Fore, a native of Amboy, and a veteran of the Vietnam War, spent 25 years working for the local area telephone company which went through several ownership changes during his tenure with them. Don trained as a radio operator and arrived at Cameron Bay after a 22 day voyage from San Francisco.

He was  stationed at the Na Trang  operations base in Vietnam, in country from September 1966 to September 1967, reporting and responding to field requests for logistics support to troops in the field.

Don and Sheri are the parents of three adult children, Mark, Lisi and Susan. Mark lives in DeKalb and Lisi and Susan live in Atlanta, Georgia a favorite travel destination for the elder fores.

Asked what he will enjoy about retirement, Don said, “I won’t have to get up at 3:00 a.m. to see if it is snowing and prepare to plow.” He enjoyed keeping Atlasta Park in shape for its many visitors.

The village will post a replacement position and begin offering applications this week and begin scheduling interviewing prospective candidates immediately. For an application contact Mayor Bob Logan at 815-456-2584 for details.
