AFC High School names December students of the month

ASHTON — The AFC High School has announced that the following students have been selected as students of the month for December.

Jonathan Voss, son of Elwood and Sheri Voss, was selected as December Student of the Month. Jonathan’s selection by the high school faculty was based upon his academic achievement, attitude, service, and participation in extra-curricular activities. Jonathan will receive a $50 savings bond from the First National Bank of Ashton.

Jonathan is a member of the senior class and is presently enrolled in Chemistry 2, Sauk Valley English, band, consumer ed, art, anatomy, physical education and calculus.

Jonathan, who is a high honors student, is active in school activities. He participates on the academic bowl team, joined band second semester and is playing the part of Bill Hickock in the AFC High School Musical “Calamity Jane.”

Jonathan enjoys being outside; his favorite activities are swimming, reading, lounging and traveling. He is part of a mission team that goes to the Gulf Coast.

Jonathan plans to attend Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis., where he will major in biology and minor in secondary education so he can teach high school science.

Reid Yocum, son of Steve Yocum and Robin Burtzos, was selected as December Student of the Month at Ashton Franklin Center High School. Reid’s selection by the high school faculty was based upon his academic achievement, attitude, service, and participation in extra-curricular activities. He will receive a $50 savings bond from the First National Bank of Ashton.

Reid is a member of the junior class and is presently enrolled in American History, pre-calculus, sociology, Spanish III, classical literature, PSAE Prep, Chemistry 2 and physical education.

Reid, who is a high honor roll student, is active in school activities by participating in basketball and Spanish Club. He has been a student of the month and Raider of the Week recipient in the past.

Reid enjoys hanging out with friends and listening to music. He plans to attend a four-year college where he will major in chemistry in order to become a chemistry teacher. Reid thanks his teachers for giving him this award.

Josh Page, son of Bob and Kris Colwell, was selected as December Student of the Month at Ashton Franklin Center High School. Josh’s selection by the high school faculty was based upon his academic achievement, attitude, service, and participation in extra-curricular activities. Josh will receive a $50 savings bond from the First National Bank of Ashton.

Josh is a member of the sophomore class and is presently enrolled in earth science, plant and animal science, physical education, health, American Lit, ag mechanics, geometry and band.

Josh, who is an honor roll student, is active in school activities. He participates in FFA, football, wrestling, baseball, Student Council and band. Josh is also the sophomore class vice president.

Josh enjoys playing sports and being with friends. In the future, he would like to attend college to study veterinary science.

Josh would like to thank his mom for always being there for him and helping him with anything he ever needed.

Sarah Matson, daughter of David and Trista Matson, was selected as December Student of the Month at Ashton Franklin Center High School. Sarah’s selection by the high school faculty was based upon her academic achievement, attitude, service, and participation in extra-curricular activities. Sarah will receive a $50 savings bond from the First National Bank of Ashton.

Sarah is a member of the freshman class and is presently enrolled in geometry, drivers ed, social science survey, physical science, concepts in literature, band, chorus and PE.

Sarah, who is an honors student, is active in school activities. She participates in volleyball, basketball, softball, band and chorus. Sarah received Student of the Month recognition in November last year. She was also recognized at the IPA Leadership Award Banquet last year. She was named “Raider of the Week” in November of this school year.

Sarah enjoys fishing, reading and playing sports. Her favorite teams are the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears. She intends to attend college and earn a degree in speech pathology.
