FRANKLIN GROVE — Its football season and for all those “old guys” that think they still “have it” your chance has arrived.
On Oct 19 at the Mel Baron Athletic Field in Franklin Grove, home of the AFC Raiders, an alumni football game has been scheduled against Stockton alumni.
The game will kick off at 1 p.m. The game is to be a fund raiser for the athletic boosters organizations at each school. Advance tickets will be on sale next week and can be purchased through alumni players, at local businesses or at each of the school offices for $10 each. Under 6 are free.
Fifty percent the proceeds from the ticket sales sold before the day of the game go directly to the AFC Athletic Boosters.
“This has been a real good fundraiser for many other local schools in the area that have scheduled a game and we are hoping the community will come out and support us old guys,” says one returning alumni, Dave Meurer.
The team has 25 players currently signed up. They team ranges in athletes from graduating classes 1985 to 2012. The team is practicing on Saturdays at 10 a.m. in Ashton at the old football field.
Scott Murphy, a past coach at AFC is helping coach the team and is still keeping his eye out for recruits. “We can always use more players even if you want to play just a few plays in the game we can make room for you” says coach Murphy.
The website to go to if you are interested in playing or to get information is alumnifootballusa.com.
The players would like to encourage the community to put the Oct 19 on their calender and come out at 1 p.m. to cheer on your favorite players from the past.
You may want to bring along some extra oxygen.
