AFC Raiders lose season opener 79-61 in Thanksgiving tourney

ASHTON — The AFC boys’ varsity dropped itsseason opener against the Polo Marcos 79-61. The beginning of their Thanksgiving tournament didn’t go quite as AFC had hoped. After enjoying a 23-14 first quarter lead the Raiders looked poised to cruise to a victory. However, after Polo turned up the defensive pressure, the Raiders committed several turnovers en route to being outscored 65-38 over the final three quarters.

The Raiders were led in scoring by Troy Mairs with 18 points, and he was helped by Ermir Ramadani with 16 points and Nick McClanahan with 12 points. Matt Gendusa and Bret Gittleson also added four points each.

The Raiders continue their tournament play this week with games Tuesday against Kirkland, Friday against Lamoille, and Saturday vs. Amboy.

In other action, the Amboy Clippers defeated LaMoille/Ohio 47-41.
