AFC Raiders suffer opening round loss to Larry Hawkins in Newman Classic

ASHTON The sixth seeded AFC boys basketball team opened up play in the Sterling Newman Christmas classic against the third seeded Chicago Public League team the Larry Hawkins Trailblazers on Thursday night.

The Raiders were coming into the game on a three game losing streak and were hoping to pick up a big win. After a see-saw first half that sawfour lead changes, the Pioneers pulled out to a halftime lead of 39-25.

The AFC Raiders faced shooting woes in the second half and found themselves trailing by 13 after three quarters. In the fourth quarter the Pioneers stretched the lead to 22 points before reaching the final score of 72-51.

Troy Mairs led the Raiders in scoring with 14 points and was followed by Ermir Ramadani with 13 points. Matt Gendusa led the team with four assists. Mairs also led the team in rebounding with 11, and was followed by Nick McClanahan and Ramadani with eight rebounds each.
