ASHTON Timely shots, great defense and a big fourth quarter run were all keys for the Raiders in a 75-72 overtime victory over conference foe Milledgeville on Saturday night.

After jumping out to an early lead, AFC fell victim to a full court press by the Missiles that forced many errant passes and mistakes. That pressure allowed Milledgeville to make up their deficit. The lead going into halftime was 35-28.

The second half started the same way the first half ended. The Missiles stretched out their lead to a seemingly insurmountable 13 points. Then the Raiders seemed to solve the pressure and Troy Mairs scored 14 of his team leading 33 points in the fourth quarter to bring the team to only one point behind with a minute left in the game.

That led to a big 3-point bucket from Matt Gendusa that gave the Raiders their first lead since the first quarter. After Mairs later hit a free throw, the lead was stretched to three with eight seconds left.

However, the Missiles were not out of life yet. They moved the ball quickly down the court and promptly hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to force the game into overtime tied at 64-64.

After 3:53 seconds of overtime battle, the score was tied 72-72 with seven seconds left when Mairs was able to find an open Bret Gittleson behind the three point arc, who promptly sank it for a 75-72 game winning shot.

Ermir Ramadani scored 10 points, Gittleson and Matt Gendusa each had nine points, Nick McClanahan scored eight point, and Graye Freeman added six points. Freeman also led the team in assists with four.

Defensively, McClanahan and Freeman both collected five steals each and Mairs grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked two shots.

The win improves the Raiders record to 9-15 on the year. The team wraps up regular season play this week with their last home game and Senior Night pn Friday against Freeport Aquin.
