AFC School Board seats newly elected members at Monday night meeting

ASHTON — The Ashton-Franklin Center School Board conducted the reorganization meeting on Monday, April 29. Elections of officers were as follows:

President, Robert Colwell; Vice-President, Mark Meurer and Secretary, Cynthia Knight.

The board approved the regular monthly meeting dates, place and time, which will be the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m., at the AFC High School library, unless otherwise noted. The meeting dates will be July 15, Aug. 19, Sept. 16, Oct. 21, Nov. 18, Dec. 16 in 2013 and Jan. 27 – the fourth Monday, Feb. 24 – the fourth Monday, March 17, April 21, May 19 and June 16 in 2014.

Sandra Pankhurst was approved as the district treasurer.

The board approved the hiring of the following coaching position for 2013-14 school year:

Ebony Harrison, sophomore volleyball coach; Kim Mairs, seventh grade volleyball coach; Galen Hart, seventh grade girls basketball coach and Marisa Wren, sixth grade girls basketball coach.

The board approved the following staff for summer custodial work: Lisa Heal, Brad Winterland and Tim Wittenauer.

The board accepted the resignation, with regrets, of the following staff: Patrick Larson as sophomore boys’ basketball coach.

They also approved a leave request for the first quarter of the 2013-14 school year.

action

The board set the fiscal year to begin on July 1, 2013 and end on June 30, 2014 and authorized the superintendent to draft a tentative 2013-14 budget.

The board approved the 2013-14 student handbook with the following revisions.

The wording was added to clarify “Only pre-packaged treats or items bought at a bakery are allowed to be given out at class parties. No homemade treats are allowed. If a cooking project is done at school, all ingredients used are to be brought in their original and sealed packages.”

Accelerated English was removed from the Weighted Grades (9-12)

Under the Required Course Selections: removed PSAE Prep from 11th grade, removed one science from 11th grade, removed one social studies from 10th grade and change number of electives to three and remove one English from twelfth grade and change number of electives to six.

On page 14 the entire paragraph regarding eighth grade math/algebra was removed. With all the changes being implemented as a result of Common Core Standards, the math department and counseling department do not feel it is beneficial to the students to take Algebra 1 as and eighth grader. Students will still have the opportunity to double up on math classes in high school, preferably their sophomore or junior year.

They added “Students are not to take pictures or video tape on the bus,” under the School Bus Rider Rules and Expectations.

Added “A second proven offense within the same sport will result in dismissal from that sport” under Drinking and Criminal Acts.

The board approved the First Reading of Board Policies and the sanding, sealing, painting and finishing of the elementary school gym floor.

They also approved the Amended 2012-2013 School Calendar, due to the use of a snow day.

A plaque was presented to Eric Grover in honor and appreciation of his years of exemplary leadership and dedicated service to District 275. Grover chose not to seek reelection in the March Consolidated Election. Chad Murphy filled his seat.
