FRANKLIN GROVE — Can we beat the summer reading drop? As we have been reflecting on our reading achievement as a school, we have noticed that approximately 30 percent of our students’ overall reading proficiency drops by an average of a little more than one full level over the summer. That loss represents about one full quarter of growth during the school year lost.
What can we do to address this? The first key is to get great books into all our students’ hands over this summer. We would like to hold a children’s book collection to help fill this need. Any gently used children’s books that you would like to donate we will be accepting from now through Friday, May 17.
We will sort the books according to students’ interests and reading levels and distribute them before the end of the school year. In addition, we are working as a staff to provide additional structure and incentives over the summer to keep students excited about reading. More details will come before the end of the school year. Thank you for your support to spread the love of reading in our AFC students! If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Sagel at the elementary school.
