FRANKLIN GROVE — The Village of Franklin Grove Streets Department purchased a used Giant-Vac leaf vacuum from Bonnell Industries of Dixon following board approval at the October village board meeting.

The Giant-Vac Municipal vacuum is built by Janiak Manufacturing, Inc., of South Windham,Conn. The vacuum unit is powered by a 4-cylinder John Deere 4045 turbo diesel engine, mounted on a trailer frame and is built to be pulled behind a vehicle to catch the leaves while they are being vacuumed up.

The recently acquired vacuum opens up a new avenue of leaf handling for the village. Residents may now rake their leaves to the edge of the street and village employees will come by on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, weather permitting, to vacuum them up. The vacuum will eliminate the need for bagging the leaves and also reduce the amount of leaves that are burned.

Public works employee Ron Miller said the most efficient way for residents to participate is to rake or blow the leaves into large piles at or near the curb or edge of the street, but not into the gutters or onto the street as they will plug the storm catch basins.

Those who wish to burn their leaves may follow village guidelines to do so. Leaf burning may only be done between March 15 and May 15 and between Sept. 15 and Nov. 30. Leaves are not to be burned on streets or sidewalks and violators are subject to fines, as well as street and sidewalk repair costs. All leaf fires must be attended at all times and must be extinguished at dusk.

It has been the desire of the village board to reduce the amount of leaf burning, but not eliminate leaf burning for those who want to continue to burn them.Questions concerning leaf pick-up will be answered by village employees by calling 815-456-2501.
