Snowmobile safety course offered

Posted: Wednesday, Nov 13th, 2013

ASHTON —Snowmobilers will have an opportunity to learn principles of safe snowmobile operation at two Department of Natural Resource snowmobile safety education courses scheduled at the following locations:

• Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Lions Club Center, Main Street, Ashton

• Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Dixon Public Schools Administration Office, 1335 Franklin Grove Road, Dixon

The classes will run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on both days. The coordinating instructors are Dianne Frye, Ray Jones, Gary French, and Betty Shearon.

The course is open to the public and is free of charge. Class sizes are limited and registration is required. Classes fill up fast, so don’t wait until the last minute to register.

For more information or to register, contact Dianne Frye at diannefrye59@yahoo.com or you can go to the Illinois Department of Natural Resource website at http://dnr.state.il.us/safety/snwmob.htm to find out more information.

Under Illinois law, the course is required for youngsters 12 through 16 years old who plan to operate a snowmobile without adult supervision. These individuals must have a Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate, issued by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) upon successful completion of the course.

“This is an excellent opportunity for young people who need the course to comply with the law, but it is also beneficial for experienced snowmobilers who wish to brush up on their safety skills,” Frye said.

The minimum eight-hour course includes instruction in safe operation, rules of the road, snowmobile laws, first aid, proper riding techniques, and related topics that will help the snowmobiler operate his/her vehicle safely.

Deadline to register for the Ashton Class is Friday, Nov.15.
